In the Spotlight: EarthAngels of Finland ry

EarthAngels of Finland ry, established in 2003, is a non-profit association dedicated to improving the well-being of immigrants from marginalised communities in Finland.

“Our operations concentrate on highlighting the often-overlooked contributions of the American descendants of enslaved people—victims of the African diaspora slave trade. We believe their stories and achievements deserve greater global recognition,” explains the association’s founder and producer, Momma Aria Arai.

“For many black individuals, being a descendant of these communities has historically been associated with shame. We aim to challenge and change that perception. EarthAngels of Finland was founded with the specific mission of educating immigrants, students, young people, and indigenous Finns of all ages, to foster pride, awareness, and understanding of the importance of heritage”, Momma Aria further describes.

Currently, the association is supported by four board members, ten official members, and 12–15 active volunteers who contribute to its ongoing activities and community outreach.

The origins of EarthAngels of Finland and the person behind it all

The California-born Momma Aria Arai has been living in Finland since 1994. Since arriving in the country, the former model and advocate for diversity and gender equality has continued her efforts to promote regional inclusion and raise awareness on the important topics on diversity. Momma Aria’s previous work includes the creation of a wide array of events addressing the different marginalized communities in society including minorities, most notably the Miss XL contest, that brought attention to body shaming of larger people, and The OurVision Song Contest.

“When I arrived in Finland, the first thing I learned was that I need to stand on my own two feet as I had no existing support system here. I had to discover and demonstrate my potential independently. Over time, I found my calling: to become a role model for others. My personal experiences with discrimination had taught me valuable lessons, which I now use to support and uplift those facing similar struggles. Unfortunately, the same prejudice and discriminatory attitudes I have encountered in the past still persist today. It was this ongoing reality that inspired me to create EarthAngels of Finland. I feel that it is important to pass information about the achievements of marginalized people to the next generation. This enhances self-esteem and pride in who you are.”

From personal experiences to collective celebration

Black History Month is a widely recognised event in the United States, created to celebrate and honour the history and achievements of Black Americans. In 2003, driven by a vision to reach broader communities, Momma Aria brought the concept to Finland and launched the event under the name “Say it Loud”. The first celebration took place in Helsinki.

“Say it Loud has since become our most prominent annual event, held every February. It kicks off with an opening day celebration featuring fashion shows, exhibitions, and previews of the diverse events taking place throughout the month-long celebration.”
The creation of Say it Loud was inspired by the global movements advocating for equal justice and recognition.
